I awoke and saw that Jeab was watching television, a holiday show with children singing pretty songs, and I noticed that there were tears running down her cheeks.

On the TV screen a little Thai girl in a wheel chair and wearing glasses was smiling brightly from a raised platform, her head cocked to the side, cheerfully singing into a positioned microphone-- her lovely Thai accent purring out the heartfelt English lyrics

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, What will I be?
Will I be pretty, will I be rich?
Here's what she said to me.

A host of children were arranged behind the little girl in a large semi-circle. They were all disfigured, some without hands or arms, others with cleft lips, or in wheel chairs with cerebral palsy, but they all wore broad smiles and joyfully sang in unison:

Que Sera, Sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be

All the children received toys and games and a year's tuition to their special schools from the audience that included a great many movie stars and other celebrities.  The children were so happy.

After the program I went down Loi Kroh to buy lemon tea from the Seven-Eleven, passing many Thais along the way. There were  vendors (with their own little children) finishing up after a long hot day along the busy street. The children were dusty, their faces smudged with street grime, their parents tired from the long hours, but what never escapes me are those wonderful smiles.  Thais as a rule have trouble with "R's", but you rarely see a Thai (as Jeab says) who is "gouchy" or "gumpy."

Cheerful is as cheerful does.  You may hear why people go to Thailand--for the exotic beauty of the land, the physical beauty of the Thai people, the good value for the dollar, but for me it is those smiles.

Now I have children of my own,
They ask there mother, what will I be
Will I be handsome, will I be rich?
I tell them tenderly

Que Sera, Sera
What ever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone..... :-)
