It's A Small World

We have all heard the term and it is amazing how it seems to keep proving itself to be true.  Last year Joey Sandling came down to Ft. Myers to work on some property he owns in the area. We both love boats so we went pub crawling at several local marinas. In our conversation I found out that Joey's dad was a Navy recruiter in Mitchell, SD (home of the world famous Corn Palace) where I was born and lived until 3rd grade when my parents moved us to Raleigh, NC.  My dad and Barbara Kistler's dad, Dr. Chuck Kistler, went to dental school together-thus the connection with Raleigh and later the move (another story).  Joey's dad moved up through all the ranks from seaman to Lt. Commander.  Not only did he serve as a recruiter in SD, but he was also stationed on the battleship USS South Dakota BB-57.  Parts of it are in a memorial in Sioux Falls, SD.  If they could have brought her up the Missouri River, I am sure they would have, but that wasn't possible.

Joey has led a very interesting life.  He and his wife have a home in Raleigh and Wilmington.  Joey made friends with Andy Griffith a long time ago and appeared as an extra on several of Andy's programs when he was filming the Andy Griffith Show.  Joey has a vivid memory of growing up in Raleigh and has lots of stories.  I am hoping he will write some of these down and post them on our site.  See you all soon at the reunion.  Thank you to all those that have made it possible.
