Gosh, could Matthew draw, paint or anything artistic.  I am sorry he did not go down in history as someone famous in the arts.  What a funny guy.  So spontaneous.

I wonder if Matthew's mural is still in the cafeteria or if it has been painted over.

I met Matt at the NCSU tennis courts when I was about 13 or 14. He was living at the Catholic Orphanage at that time and we would ride bikes all over Raleigh. He knew the cooks real well at the orphanage and spent a lot of time over at Floyd Pope's house. Floyd was an incredible man.  I always stopped there before going on to the orphanage to look for him to play tennis.  Next to tennis, basketball was our other favorite sport.  He would ride his bike over to my house on Lake Boone Trail and we would play for hours. It seemed like Matt knew everyone in Raleigh.  Later he moved to the YMCA to live.  A lot of people helped Matt financially.  Suzie Sprunt and my sister Chris were best friends at Broughton, and both of them were artists.  They loved Matt's funky art work and encouraged him. Suzie's parents, Dr. & Mrs. Sprunt, took a liking to Matt too and helped him a lot.  We continued to be friends even after Matt left Raleigh, and went up to Richmond to study art at Richmond Polytechnic Institute - later a part of Virginia Commonweath Univ.  While I was in the Navy, I stopped to visit him on my way up to New London, CT sub base and spent a few days at his apartment.   Not too long after I left, he was playing basketball with some friends at school and had a heart attack.  He died on the basketball court.  I had forgotten about the mural he did at school. His humor will always be remembered and I look forward to seeing him again when my time comes.  God Bless You All! I hope I can make it to the nifty fifty reunion.

Matthew and I were friends in high school art class. I knew he had passed away young, but never knew what happened. Thanks Barry for sharing those memories

We definitely should go over to Broughton to see Matthew's mural. Hopefully it is still there. Thanks Barry for sharing that part of your life with Matthew.
