Jamie (Hamilton) enjoyed great horseshoe celebrations with Johnny in the 1970s --after college. A special neighborhood clan it seems. Last spring we saw Johnny when he came to a barbecue we had --he was looking as dapper as always. I recall the 1998 Reunion (or was it 2003) when we elected him as the least changed male in our class. So sorry for Clare and his family, but we will always have a young-at-heart Johnny in our memories. We are lucky that he was in our Broughton class with his wit and smile.  --Debbie Swain

Fell in love with him at Martin when Lacy and Mt. Vernon elementaries joined forces.  But, so did every other girl in our 7th grade class.  Beside that, he was a warm and thoughtful person.  Blessings and strength to his family and friends on his loss.  DA

When I read the obituary, I was heartbroken.  Johnny was my boyfriend our senior year at Broughton, and I agree, he hadn't changed much in all these years.  I really enjoyed talking with him and Clare at the last reunion.  Johnny was was a sincere, sweet and gentle guy, a true friend to those who knew him well. My heart aches for Clare  and their family.

With love to them...

Ann

Johnny was one of the "cool" guys with a soft gentle smile from right out of Steve McQueen.....A friend from Martin and Broughton and got to know him even better in the eighties (after work days)  with his friend Robert when a few of us guys would meet at the Profile on Whitaker Mill for a few Buds to sort out the day's events.  He retained that school boy smile and a gentleness which was his trademark.....Not a mean bone in Johnny Stone's body...... One of the best as his classmates have commented.....Having known Johnny can only resonate a better path for us all.....So sad.....

Deeply saddened to learn of Johnny's passing.  I have such fond memories of great times with him.  He was a very special member of the Class of '68, someone whose smile and kindness were offered to all.

I feel so fortunate to have had such a wonderful family of friends during my Broughton High School years. We all enjoyed "Johnny" so much. I have thought of him daily for the last week.

I went to the memorial yesterday here in Wilmington, and saw Monty Steed, Tommy and Barbara Oates, Billy Jean and Andy Aritakus and David Barnes there.  I remember the re-union before the last one where I told Johnny that I thought he needed some hair coloring to look older, and then the next one he came up and said look Joey, I have got some gray, and I said " It's about time"  Knew him at Martin when I went there in 7th grade from Greensboro, and he was one of the first people I met.  Didn't know who to hang with then, so I hung out with what I think now was the ADD group, we just didn't know it.  I was shocked to read it in the Raleigh paper, which we do get there, and I and all of you will miss Johnny Stone.  John had a good life and like my father always told me "It's too short"

I miss such a long-time 12-year classmate, from Mt. Vernon, Martin, through Broughton. Such a great neighbor playmate and friend. He'll be missed.

I was riding down HIllsborugh St on a cool clear fall morning recently when I recalled a similar cool clear fall day many years ago when Johnny and Ialked his sister Mary Alice into driving us from west Raleigh to a record store in Cameron Village to pool our resources and buy the latest 45 from The Four Seasons, 'Ragdoll' .  As I was riding  I remembered that I forgot to pay Johnny for my half of the record. Well, I had not driven 5 more minutes when what do you think came on my Serius radio? Yep, 'Ragdoll' by the Four Seasons.  I guess Johnny was reminding me that I still owe him for my half of that 45  Johnny was a great guy and I miss him.
