Jimmy Valvano was an incredible coach.  He led the team to a national championship in 1983. I was living in OR and just happened to be visiting my parents at the time. As soon as the game was over, I headed down to Hillsboro street to join the thousands of people celebrating.  It was a crazy night.  I had to park on Dixie Trail and walk to the student union.  Everyone was screaming, yelling, drinking beer, honking horns, etc.  I couldn't believe my eyes when I got there.  Students had taken furniture out of the student union, piled it 10' high and built a bonfire in the big brick courtyard behind the SU.  Most of them were drunk I imagine and were totally out of control.  It was mob hysteria that I had never seen before....kind of scary.  I am sure the campus police probably just let them do what ever they wanted.  It would have been too dangerous for them to intervene.

Thanks for that pleasant memory Barry.  I lived on Gaston Street at the time and remember walking out onto my front porch after State won at the buzzer, and you could hear a loud roar from over Hillsborough Street way.

My daughter wasn't even two at the time as my wife and she and a couple of friends packed into my little red VW convertible and drove over to the brickyard.  I found parking a few blocks away, so we walked from there, my little girl straddling my shoulders (wearing a Carolin blue jacket of all things).  A few State students poked a little fun at the jacket,--Anna was just learning about this rivalry thing. But what a wild night is right.

At my writing this reply to you Barry, I will be pulling for that rival Tuesday morning (here in Phonm Penh).

A State fan pulling for Carolina--Who would have thought.  My degree might be in jeopardy.  :-)
